Extracts from Arthur Cox’s Diary Notes for 1993. These notes are very brief – just reminders of events.
Found the following relating to taking grandchildren to Chislehurst Caves.
Memo: “Arthur to work” is doing early morning newspaper work and deliveries)
1993 AUG 31: TUE. Arthur to work. Nicola & Ian arrived with their children who are stopping with us for few days while Ian & Nicola visit Gloucestershire with friends. Sylvia went to Slimclub and Arthur was with the kids drawing and painting, etc. Played with computer. Arthur in evening went to MAG. (Maldon Archaeology Group)
1993 SEP 1: WED. Arthur to work then all went to visit Frinton. Water was very cold but we played on the beach and then walked into Walton-on-the-Naze and back. Stopped at Danbury on way home. Arthur missed Tai Chi class because too tired.
1993 SEP 2: THU. Arthur to work. Then all of us to South Woodham Ferrers where got a map from the library and then on to visit Chislehurst Caves – a very interesting visit. Then drove cross country roads to Eynsford where we had a picnic by the Roman Villa and a walk by the river Darent to a Wildlife Centre. Found an eyed hawk moth caterpillar. Home by 4.30pm. Made a crossbow for Kieren. Bryony was busy on computer typing details of Chislehurst Caves.
1993 OCT 27: WED. Arthur to work. Then both to Tiptree to get Bryony and then to Romford for Amber. Bryony and Amber to stay with us for three days (half-term). The girls went to Latchingdon Park after lunch.
1993 OCT 28: THU. Arthur to work. Then all to Chislehurst Caves: after that to Lullingstone Roman Villa and then home. Stopped in Latchingdon. Hasu gave the girls sweets. (Memo: Hasu owner of news agency in Latchingdon where Arthur worked each morning)
1993 OCT 29: FRI. Arthur to work then all to London:- parked at Wickford Rly Stn and took train to Liverpool Street then underground train to Baker St. Here we a found huge queue for Madame Tussaud’s so changed our minds and by underground to Waterloo where went to MOMI (Museum of Moving Images. Very good and lots to see (must visit again when have more time). Then lunched on Queen’s Walk (embankment) and walked over Hungerford bridge to get underground from Embankment to South Kensington. Meant to visit Victoria & Albert Museum but there was a bomb scare and everybody was being sent out from all the museums which closed. So walked along Brompton Rd and visited Harrod’s for a look around then underground from Knightsbridge to Liverpool St. Quick journey (35 minutes) to Wickford. Then drove to Chelmsford for a meal at Pizza Hut (both the children full!). Home and all tired so early to bed.
1993 OCT 30: SAT. Arthur to work. Kid’s not wanting any breakfast! To Hockley to visit Isobel and Colin (Colin’s birthday today). (not mentioned in original diary but we must have taken the girls back to their homes today)
I have the little leaflet about the caves. Also have the notes that Bryony typed using information from various leaflets.
